You haven't heard from your former best friend in years. When you happen to see her in public, she looks worn, tired, and physically drained. She seems to frantically need you and sets up a time when the two of you can sit down and talk. Through your confusion, you agree and wonder. Then when the meeting is to occur, she isn't there.

So what do you do? You go to her home to try to find out what is going on. However, no one answers the door. Being the caring person that you are, you knock and try the doorknob which is unlocked. You enter, calling her name while nosing around. Then you find her, dead.

This is the situation Claire Newman finds herself in when discovering Lydia Finelli. To add to the situation, Lydia's death is determined to be a suicide. Claire just doesn't believe that. This just isn't like Lydia, especially since things were not neatly put away before the supposed suicide. Lydia had been prescribed antidepressants and had to avoid certain foods since this combination could kill her. Eating the foods caused the chemical reaction which took Lydia's life.

Then in the mail Claire receives a financial statement of a stock in the medical field with Lydia's note saying, "Just in case." So what does she do?

Claire has a busy life without this. She juggles a journalism career with a prominent magazine, marriage to a successful attorney and the lives of three children, two being twin boys. Granted she does have a nanny, though, to allow her her freedom.

MY EX-BEST FRIEND is fast-paced, light and surprisingly addictive. While I was anticipating a chick-lit novel, this was a delightful surprise. There is a logical progression of the storyline that is written in such a manner that you can't put the book down. It flows and builds intensity until the last page. The thoughts of Claire show an author who knows what it means to juggle a family and a career without shortchanging either.

You should definitely look for MY EX-BEST FRIEND by Beth Brophy and any future fiction by her. I'm wondering if this is the beginning of a Claire Newman series.
