Bianca Balducci is a fairly typical teenager except she is too trusting of others. She actually allows a depressed friend, Kerrie, to give her a home permanent. Then just to add to the disastrous hair, Kerrie begins to spend too much time with Bianca's boyfriend, Doug. It seems that Kerrie is requiring his comfort for her problems and both appear not to have time for Bianca with her hair atrocity.

Bianca is naturally curious, which some people see as nosy. Her older sister, Connie, is a private investigator. Bianca sees herself as an amateur sleuth working with her sister.

Another of her Bianca's friends is Sarah who is working as an intern in a local art museum. Sarah is concerned since some of the modern abstract paintings are suspected of being forgeries. The logical suspect happens to be a Hispanic guard, Hector, who is also an art student. Sarah has a crush on Hector and wants Bianca to convince Connie to look into the forgeries since she is certain Hector could not be involved.

With the demands of school, home, and a questionable boyfriend and best friend, Bianca stays busy. When her two best friends Sarah and Kerrie continue their feuds, Bianca is torn and overwhelmed. Added to this is Neville Witherspoon, who looks like a blond Hugh Grant and has a British accent, and his father, Bertrand Witherspoon. Meanwhile, the forgery problem becomes more involved and dangerous for anyone asking questions.

FINDING THE FORGER is fast-paced and would be enjoyable for a teenage girl audience. The problems of Bianca's daily life are very realistic, except for being an investigator. The characters are very individualistic and definitely have their own personalities. Along with the overcoming of communication problems, the typical problems of teenage life seem easily resolved within this book. It's a wonderful book to read, but all the resolutions are almost too nicely tied up.

Libby Sternberg was an Edgar Award finalist with her first Bianca Balducci novel, UNCOVERING SADIE'S SECRETS.
