Brenda Strange, attorney, moved to Tampa, Florida, and bought an old house called Malfour, after she recovered from a shooting in her old office in the Northeast. She became very enamoured of the house, so much so that her partner Tina returned to New Jersey, saying that Brenda was getting weird. The house is haunted by the spirits of a pair of lovers who used to live there.

It is just before Christmas, and Brenda, now a private investigator, is asked to look into the drowning death of Paula Drakes. The Tampa police have ruled the death of this popular and successful businesswoman an accident, but her sister Denise Miller doesn't think so. Paula was afraid of the water and would never have gone scuba diving.

Brenda feels secure enough to open an office. She hires a woman who is working as a waitress to be in charge and is very happy, only missing her partner, who is planning on coming down for Christmas. Perhaps they can reconcile?

Carlotta and Angelique, the ghosts of Malfour House, are very much in evidence. Brenda's parents come for their Christmas visit, and Brenda is shocked at her mother's appearance. She is dying and Brenda must make her peace with the woman who bore her

Henderson has the facility to make even the ghosts believable, and the supernatural elements of the story fit. The characters are just on the edge of satire but the author escapes that trap. The loving relationship between Brenda and Tina is also strongly depicted. THE BURNING OF HER SIN was the first book in this supernatural mystery series. In that one, the story of Malfour is told. TANGLED AND DARK takes us into another supernatural realm.
