When US Postal Inspector Max Diamond is viewing confiscated porn videos, he discovers child porn/snuff videos. He believes he is viewing the actual murder of the children on the videos. He calls this to the attention of his supervisor, but she tells him that it's his imagination and that they are staged, not real. Unconvinced, Max sets out to find the source of the videos, and to eliminate the child killer..

His investigations discover a Peru to South Florida distribution network. which involves him with Peruvian terrorists and the Cuban Mafia in Little Miami. The ring seems to connect with the Shining Path operatives in Peru and with Cuco O'Burke an international powerful low-profile Latin.

While Max is obsessed with solving this, he has to deal with a malingering postal worker. Diamond is the grandson of Jewish immigrants, an Ivy League graduate (Yale), has a pet tortoise, rides an exotic motorcycle, practices a Zen lifestyle, is bald, is 20ish , and has a grandmother who makes delicious cabbage rolls.

Two of Diamond's Yale buddies with whom he hasn't been in contact for years die under mysterious and bizarre circumstances. The lawyers' deaths are ruled suicides by the police, but Diamond's investigations lead him to believe them to be murder. The circumstances seem to connect with their membership in the secret Lyre and Stone society of their college days.

Diamond's college flame, Phayle Tolland, suddenly appears on the scene and tries to rekindle that flame. Her actions open her to suspicion about the deaths of the two former college friends and the truth hidden behind her connection with them and the secret Lyre brotherhood. Diamond must come to terms with his feelings for Guiomary O'Burke, who is the daughter of the crime boss he is gunning for.

This is a high action suspense thriller featuring an unusual protagonist. Never have we had a US Postal Inspector before! Diamond is a sympathetic, warm investigator with a strong moral sense and determination to find the truth and remedy it. He is a finely drawn character. His relationships with his grandmother (with her cabbage rolls), his boss, and his pet tortoise, Picard, are a delight.

The commentary about Miami culture is enlightening. We have excellent glimpses of the procedures of Florida law enforcement and the workings of the US Postal Service. The descriptions of the Florida landscape bring it close to the reader's eye.
