'Twas a week before Christmas in 1954 in New York City, and all Paige Turner wants to do is shop for Christmas presents for her friends and new boyfriend, New York City Police Detective, Dan Street.

Paige, aged 28, has made a new life for herself after her husband, Bob Turner, was killed in the Korean War. She has found a job as a staff writer for a pulp mystery magazine, Daring Detective, and the detective who was the police advisor on the magazine has become her boyfriend.

Writing for Daring Detective is Paige's dream job. But for now she is the only woman in the office with five men and is considered to be on the bottom of the totem pole. She is assigned to do proofreading, editing, making coffee, and running all the errands for the office, but she loves the job nonetheless. Paige especially likes to follow up on murder cases that the magazine writes about, and that often puts her in a lot of danger.

Paige's boyfriend, Detective Dan Street, tells her in no uncertain terms that she is not to get involved in murder cases anymore. More than anything else Paige wants to go along with Dan's advice but when her late husband's army buddy, Terry Catcher, contacts Paige and asks her to help find the person who murdered his sister, well, what is she supposed to do?

MURDER IS A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND by Amanda Matetsky, is the second book in the Paige Turner mystery series. Paige is a likable person and very much in tune with her life in the 1950s. She knows the best way to get what she needs from her boss and co-workers while still having them believe that they are in charge.

The novel has some wonderful secondary characters, including Paige's best friend and next-door neighbor, Abby Moscowitz, who is wonderfully flamboyant in looks as well as her lifestyle. These two team up with Terry Catcher and form a sleuthing trio that manages to collect clues that ultimately lead to the killer.

Matetsky adds lots of flavor to her time setting. She mentions metal ice cube trays with the lever you have to push in order to get the ice out, the seats on the subways that were made of some sort of straw that always poked you, and many other things that helps the readers place themselves into the New York City of 1954.

MURDER IS A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND is a clever story and even though it's set just before Christmas, it's a great read for a day at the beach. Pick up a copy of this book and introduce yourself to Paige Turner and her friends. It's fun and a fast read -- you'll enjoy it.
