Faith Whitney is an American living and working in Germany. She smuggles antiques and other similar objects in and out of East and West Berlin. As the daughter of a Bible smuggler, this career seems almost natural. So far Faith has managed to remain neutral and merely go on existing with both factions; yet, this suddenly changes. The East German Stasi have caught her.

They promise to tell her the truth about her father if she helps them smuggle a package into Moscow. If she refuses they will kill her. If the package does not arrive in 48 hours they will kill her. Faith has very few options and must transport this package without losing her life. As she does not trust the Stasi nor does she know what she is carrying, she will do her best to protect her own life and still get the information regarding her father.

RIFT ZONE is a classic Cold War spy thriller. Although this book does not deal with the United States and international politics, it captures the feel of previous books in this genre. The situation in Germany is unbearable; however, being addicted to the adrenaline rush Faith can see no other future. This book depicts the violence, fear and torture that is used on any enemy or perceived enemy of a country. While the tortures and mind games seem unjust and frightening, they are merely the acts of a country that is desperate for power.

As RIFT ZONE is written by a woman, it does not contain the idea that a woman cannot truly accomplish anything. Although some of the members of the KGB and other organizations seem to believe this, women are constantly saving the day and keep plans together. It is rather unusual to have a spy thriller with an almost feminist slant. RIFT ZONE is the first novel of Raelynn Hillhouse.
