When Easy Rawlins dug himself out and emerged from his office after the race riots in Los Angeles in 1965, he saw the area demolished. Almost all the stores had been set on fire and destroyed and the people in the community were stealing whatever they could from the ravaged shops. Easy didn't blame them. Things were hard for black people and he knew that the pressures of their lives were bound to result in an explosion sooner or later.

A white cop visits Easy after the riots and tells him that the police need him to help solve a homicide. A young black woman was murdered in her apartment and her killer must be found. The police need Easy to do it because he can wander around the area and ask questions without causing problems that might start the riots again.

After speaking to the woman's aunt, Easy learns that the prime suspect is a white man who was attacked during the riots. The murdered woman, known to her close friends and family as Little Scarlet, led the man to the safety of her apartment where she nursed him back to health - and where she was later found murdered.

Unlicensed PI Easy not only investigates the crime but also investigates human nature., two things that he does incredibly well.

LITTLE SCARLET is the ninth novel in this spectacular Easy Rawlins series by Walter Mosley. The book permits the readers the pleasure of visiting other characters and their lives that began in the earlier Easy volumes and it also includes some characters from other Mosley books.

Mosley is in top form with LITTLE SCARLET. He tells his readers about history and life and how the black community survived. The author respects each and every one of his characters. He finds the beauty in all of them no matter what they look like or how evil they are. Mosley believes that there is something worthwhile in everyone.

There is no way a reader can't notice the beauty in Mosley's words. The author uses the English language in such a way that can bring tears to your eyes and heaviness to your heart. This is a writer of the highest caliber.

I'm an avid fan of Walter Mosley and admire every book he's penned. All of them will leave you smitten.

LITTLE SCARLET is top notch. You deserve to treat yourself to this book and the Easy Rawlins series. It doesn't matter which book you start with, the important thing is to begin reading them. You won't be disappointed.
