Maxie McNabb, who we first met in DEAD NORTH, has decided to take to the road a bit earlier than usual this year. An old friend in Grand Junction, Colorado, has asked Maxie to stop by and see her whenever she decides to trek out of her home in Alaska. Sarah doesn't want to discuss it over the phone and she doesn't usually ask favors of her friends, so Maxie knows that it is important, and she packs up the Winnebago, grabs Stretch the mini-dachshund, and takes off.

Eleven days later. Maxie arrives at Sarah's home. Intruders have broken in and are still there. Maxie frightens them off and enters the home only to find Sarah's bedroom in a shambles. Sarah has been hospitalized with a heart attack. Maxie and Sarah, both 63 years old, have been friends since university days, and Maxie feels responsible for the safety of Sarah's possessions until Sarah can return to her house.

However, the next day, Sarah dies and Maxie is left with the mystery of finding some papers that Sarah had told her about. Another old college chum, Ed Norris, had flown down from Portland when he heard Sarah was ill, and Sarah's son, Alan, seems to be among the missing.

In order to avenge her friend, Maxie must find the missing papers, which seem to have something to do with Sarah's genealogy, figure out why Ed has arrived on the scene, and locate Alan, all before winter arrives in Colorado so Maxie and Stretch can reach a warmer part of the US before cold weather sets in.

This is the first book in a new series by Sue Henry, author of the Jessie Arnold musher series, which started with MURDER ON THE IDITAROD TRAIL. Henry, with this series, proves that over-60s can have as much fun as 30-somethings. And for those who don't like books set in Alaska, these, for the most part, will be set in other parts of the US with a more changeable group of characters. Maxie and Stretch are people I would like to have a friends. Try THE SERPENT'S TRAIL. You will like them also.
