Little is known about Sherlock Holmes's whereabouts after his 'death' in Switzerland's Riechenbacher Falls in 1891. Long-time fans of Holmes know about his miraculous survival as he returned three years later to decipher another crime that has baffled authorities. But, where has he been? What has he been doing for those missing years?

Even his wife Mary Russell is not to clear over what happened, but she has a general idea. When Holmes learns about the disappearance of an English master spy in India, he knows he must try to find him. You see he was in the company of Kimball O'Hara during his absence and he has great respect for him and his abilities.

If the name sounds familiar, it should. Kimball O'Hara is the infamous Kim in the well-known Rudyard Kipling novel. Kim is good at what he does so his disappearance is unnerving. Holmes will go through an elaborate ruse to try to find him and his wife is not planning on staying behind.

In this popular, long-running series Laurie R King continues the Sherlock Holmes mythos by giving him a partner who is his intellectual equal and who has helped her husband solve mysteries time and time again. She is no-nonsense and does not let male chauvinism get in her way. If she knows she can do something, she will do it and she does not care what anyone else thinks. She has delivered in the past and will continue to deliver once again.

In THE GAME, the title refers to the popular sport of espionage, in this case at the borders of India. Kim has been working for the Crown and has been missing for quite sometime. Holmes travels with his wife in a surreptitious manner, and the reader gets a feeling for the ingenuity of this married couple as they travel under different personae so that they cannot be recognized and so they blend in with the Indian crowds at the bazaars.

The trail will lead them to a power-hungry man who is obsessed about everything and loves to collect things and play dangerous games -- something in the tone of a Richard Connell short story. Mary and Sherlock will use subterfuge trying to figure out what his plan is and during the process try to find leads as to O'Hara's whereabouts.

The novel takes its time in getting there, but all good things come to those who wait. King provides a thrilling action scene that will leave readers breathless from the shocks and surprises within the case.

Special kudos goes to Jenny Sterlin who portrays all the characters in the unabridged recording of King's novel. Ms Sterlin creates believable tones and accents on all the foreign characters, makes great distinctions portraying children and men, plus she gives Mary and Sherlock their own distinctive personality that one cannot get from reading the book. It takes a cassette or two to get used to it, but in the end you will be delighted. Great book, great reader, what more could you ask for?
