Detective Joe Keough is feeling frustrated with his life. Although he has been a part of the Serial Killer Task Force for over a year, Washington DC, the task force's headquarters, still does not feel like home. On top of this feeling of alienation, the organization itself might be at risk.

The Task Force is currently facing two possible problems; firstly the opening of a new headquarters in the Midwest or secondly the complete disbanding of the organization. A lot of the funding that was earmarked for this organization was in fact used for Homeland Security; therefore, their resources are stretched. Then Keough and his partner Harriet Conners get a lucky break in terms of the fate of the organization.

There have been a string of kidnappings and killings in St Louis and Chicago. While the crimes are currently being handled as the work of two separate killers, there are several surprising similarities. While the villain in Chicago is targeting little boys, the criminal in St Louis is targeting little girls. Both cities are experiencing one disappearance per month and the disappearances are only a couple of days apparent. In fact, there is the possibility that it is one killer with a slightly unusual MO. Keough, Conners and FBI profiler Nicole Busby find themselves on the trail of a dangerous killer who will begin threatening them as they get closer to the truth.

ARCH ANGELS deals with a popular topic in the mystery genre - serial killers. Every author has an idea about what makes a serial killer so interesting to the public. Is a serial killer genetically predisposed to murder or is a serial killer simply the product of his or her environment? Just about every person has their own theory on the topic and the truly great authors work to convince the reader that their ideas are the correct ones.

ARCH ANGELS is composed of numerous short chapters. This writing can help to make a story more suspenseful; however, it can also make it much harder to get interested in the plot and characters of a book. For me, the short chapters did make it difficult for me to get into the book, but once I was interested I was glad that I had stuck with it. While Randisi's ideas are not completely brand-new, he does create an interesting story.

Robert J Randisi is the author of two other series; one featuring Nick Delvecchio and one featuring Miles Jacoby. This is the fifth book to feature Detective Joe Keough.
