Jennie Ogilvie decides to take her vacation in Lochdubh, Scotland with plans to seduce Constable Hamish Macbeth. Her co-worker, Pricilla Halburton Smythe, has been singing praises of Macbeth, her former fiance. Jennie, jealous of Pricilla, vows to gain Macbeth's affections and put Pricilla's nose out of joint. When she arrives at the small Scottish village she finds Macbeth is not the handsome Scot she had visualized, but decides to stay on to help him solve his mystery.

There have been a series of poison pen letters sent to various inhabitants of the village, but the police don't view them as serious. Then the post mistress is found, apparently having committed suicide, but Hamish calls it murder, and sets out to find a reason for it. The pace escalates when there is another brutal murder. Hamish is assisted in his pursuit of the murderer by Espeth Grant, a local newspaper reporter who will give Jennie competition for Hamish's affections.

This is the 20th in the series of Hamish Macbeth and it still retains the charm and humor of the original.

Set in the Scottish village of Braikie, there is a true sense of the people and of the place. There is a long list of suspects, all of whom are colorful and worthy of suspicion. There are continual skirmishes between Detective Chief Inspector Blair and Hamish. It is amusing to watch the struggle of Hamish to prevent his transfer from his treasured cottage with his dog, Lug and his ever-constant cup of tea.

The arrival on the scene of would-be star reporter, Pat Mallone, and his manipulation of Jennie adds humor to the story. We cannot help but admire Hamish Macbeth's struggle against the women who would capture him.

This is an enjoyable cozy mystery with lots of plot and action. It is an easy read. Hopefully there will be more of Hamish Macbeth in the future.
