GREEN STREAK is the second Zeke Armstrong mystery. The first in the series, RED CARD, allowed the related authors, Daniel J. Hale (uncle) and Matthew LaBrot (nephew) to win the 2003 Agatha Award for best children's/young adult mystery.

In the latest adventure, 13-year-old Zeke visits New York City with the Gao family, which include his best friend, Pow Wow (Richard) and Pow Wow's parents. Everyone has his or her own agenda for the trip. Mr. Gao is a doctor and in the city for a medical convention. Zeke and Pow Wow plan to participate in an inline skating race. Mrs. Gao just expects to get some good meals out of the trip.

All plans go out the window when, after meeting a friendly old lady at a lemonade stand, Zeke and Pow Wow witness the woman being mugged. Knowing that the woman's vital medication was in her purse at the time of the robbery, Zeke has no choice but to chase after the man on skates and dressed in green, while Pow Wow calls for an ambulance and the police.

The woman who had been mugged turns out to be a wealthy woman. Zeke suspects that the mugging was more than a random act of violence. He believes that the victim is not out of danger. Those responsible may be after Zeke and Pow Wow as well. Determined to set things right, the two boys are submerged in a case that has them risking their very lives.

Action-packed with bone-harrowing scenes and creepy characters, Hale and LaBrot have managed to craft another satisfying mystery with GREEN STREAK. The plot is clever, the dialogue crisp and the tidbits of historical facts about NYC are intriguing. Though a book geared toward young readers, it is easily a novel that can be appreciated and enjoyed by all mystery lovers regardless of age. I only hope the wait for the third in the series, WHITE OUT, is not too long!
