I've been a fan of Jonnie Jacobs' book since the first Kate Austen book, MURDER AMONG NEIGHBORS was released in 1994, and I also enjoyed the second book. When I saw that there was a new book out in 1996, SHADOW OF DOUBT, I was excited and then disappointed since Kate was missing and instead it featured attorney, Kali O'Brien. My disappointment didn't last through the reading of the book. I like Kali. She is smart, has believable personal problems and is dedicated to finding out the truth.

INTENT TO HARM is the sixth book in the series, and in my opinion, they just keep getting better. Kali gets a mysterious call from Betty who won't tell her what the problem is, but urges the lawyer to meet her at a remote spot near Lake Tahoe. Kali decides it also a good time to visit her cousin and do some catching up.

She doesn't learn too much more about the possible client at the meeting. Shots ring out, the client is killed immediately and Kali is also wounded with the killer determined to finish the job, until a car drives up.

Once the police discover Betty's identity, Kali sets to discover why this quiet woman whose husband is in advanced stages of Alzheimer's needed a lawyer and went to such lengths to have privacy -- a ploy that actually didn't work since she was found.

The stage shifts among various people, including the hired killer, the man who hired him, the Lake Tahoe police and the real quarry of the killers. Betty's niece had disappeared years before and had built up a second life with her son and, so far, has not been discovered. She is worried because a couple of weeks earlier, she had received a call from a woman who claimed to be her aunt. As Kali searches for her, will she also lead the killer to his intended victim?

Kali and Jacobs are in top form in this well-written and exciting novel. As always, the characterization is superb. Highly recommended.
