Graham Scobie has just been acquitted for a murder that has been making headlines in all major English newspapers and tabloids. He was found not guilty for the stabbing death of Devon Bliss, a newsreader for a major television network, even though the evidence was stacked against him. The public is clamoring for blood, but they want one man's in particular. The head of Sir John Hathaway, his defence lawyer, placed on a spike .

Now, after this sensationalistic case, his lawyer has retired from the legal profession. He is trying to live a bucolic existence in the country, but he has been less than successful. Unfortunately so is his client, who is moving to the same town as his lawyer.

Superintendent Gregory Summers, doing a favor for his superior, is investigating a case of vandalism and harassment against Sir John Hathaway and his former client is the lead suspect. Things get to be interesting in the country with lots of unexpected surprises in the way.

Summers cannot understand why his superiors are tying his hands while doing the investigation. Things are not quite as they seem and they are a bit more complicated. Is Hathaway actually the target or is someone else? Is Graham Scobie's move to the country a coincidence or a cleverly-planned manipulation? It is not what you might expect and it will definitely surprise you.

Kelly brings a small town feel to the story with strongly developed characters hiding secrets and trying to remain anonymous. There are many players involved in the book and each plays their own unique part within the story. There are several twist and turns that keep readers guessing till the very end. It is unfortunate that it took so long to discover this author. This book is a real treat and one that should not be missed. It is a rare treat.
