Grace Hollister, an American schoolteacher on a working holiday in the Lake District, finds a handsome young man, apparently dead, face down in a stream. She revives Peter Fox, and gets involved in his life.

Grace had come to England with a colleague from St. Ann's who had found her old thesis adviser and gone off with him, leaving Grace to visit the haunts of the Lake Poets on her own. Peter feels he owes Grace at least a drink for saving his life, so they meet in a pub. A pair of villains, nicknamed Mutt and Jeff by the pair, follow them into the pub. Peter disappears and Grace is kidnapped,

After escaping from her kidnappers, Grace finds her way to Peter's living quarters over his antique shop, in an old house. She finds the door open, the shop ransacked, and a door to a secret passage unlocked.

HIGH RHYMES AND MISDEMEANORS is fast-paced spoof on the romantic suspense genre. In this case, the heroine, Grace, is more than able to take care of herself, instead of being dependent on a man with a shady past (Peter). She's a woman out of place, an American in England and Peter is the classic English beauty with dark blonde hair and changeable blue eyes, who is somewhat out of time. Although he wears jeans, his cashmere and silk upper garments belong to an earlier group of heroes. I look forward to the second ŒPoetic Death Mystery' -- VERSE OF THE VAMPYRE -- due out in late 2004.
