Mma Precious Ramotswe's engagement to Mr. J.L.B. Matekone, proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, is still a matter of interest to the local residents of Gabarone. Trouble is brewing however.

Mma Ramotswe goes to Mr Matekone's place of business and finds his apprentices lazing around while Mr. Matekone is home, very depressed. Mma Ramotswe takes matters into her own hands and moves The #1 Ladies' Detective Agency into a room in the garage and puts her assistant, Mma Makutsi, in charge of both businesses while she goes out of town to investigate a poisoning.

Mma Makutsi takes both businesses in hand . Meanwhile, Mr. J.L.B. Matekone has been moved to the orphan farm run by Mma Potokwani so he can recover from his severe depression. Mma Potokwani also asks Mma Ramotswe's help with a feral child that has been brought to the orphan farm.

Listening to Lisette Lecat, a South African actress, read a book by Alexander McCall Smith is a pleasant way to spend a few hours. Ms Lecat knows the region and is able to change her tone and accent ever so slightly for each new character. McCall Smith's characters might lead simpler lives than we do, but they are certainly more civil to each other than we are. We might learn something by reading or listening to the books in this series.
