Alice Conway first met her fiancé Lenny when she was working as a bunny girl at a posh London gentlemen's club. Although she didn't realize it at the time, Lenny was one half of a famous comedy team; however, his fame did not endear him to Alice but his personality, wit and humor won her over.

Unfortunately, Lenny was a troubled person and after many bouts with liquor and drugs he committed suicide. Lenny also was not faithful to Alice and one of his liaisons was with another bunny girl, Kitty, who, shortly before Lenny killed himself, disappeared from a party. Now seven years later, Alice has been receiving newspaper clippings in the mail about a body found in a car which had been submerged in a lake, but due to drought conditions, the lake's level has dropped.

Alice's life has not been especially happy either. After a failed marriage to a photographer, she has retired to the countryside to live in a house which Lenny had purchased for her shortly before his death. She finds the quiet solitude of the country and her love for her horses and dog almost enough for her, but Alice admits she is lonely, especially for male companionship. Her tranquil life is shattered when Jack, Lenny's former partner comes crashing back into her life. Jack is a mess, he has been drinking heavily, is having family problems and Alice wishes he would leave but has no idea how to force him to go.

Laura Wilson has written a psychological tale of unhappy people, their lives and the messes they have made of everything they touch. Alice tries to extricate herself from that world but unfortunately the world will not go away. Alice is a somewhat sympathetic character, but I found myself wishing I could grab her and shake her and tell her to wise up! It's a good writer who makes the reader so passionate about the characters in a book. This is a read it in one sitting book and one I would highly recommend.
