Alfeo Ciacia, a Chicago policeman, is killed during a robbery in a neighborhood grocery. At the funeral, his 13-year-old son is told: "The Snowman did it." Nick never forgot. Twenty three years later, Nick Ciacia is an FBI agent, living in Seattle. He's never forgotten and has never stopped searching for The Snowman.

Finally one of Nick's snitches tells him that there is a rumor going around that the white-haired German immigrant he is looking for is named Bart L. Fritz. Ciacia traces him through a friend at the INS and finds a man named Barthel Wilhelm Franz entered the US 23 years earlier, and he is now calling himself Bart Williams.

Williams' wife, Madison Sloane, is waiting for him at the Pike Street Market. Long after the appointed meeting time, Williams races past her, says he has to go to the bathroom, and disappears. Ciacia had arranged to meet Maddy at a social event a few days earlier, so he invents a reason to speak with her this time and takes her home, since she lives in the suburbs and hasn't taxi fare with her.

Slowly, they uncover Williams' past. He is not the man Sloane thought she had married. In fact, after only six months of wedded life, she is ready to leave him, even before the mysterious events at the market. Finally, Ciacia will be able to avenge his father, and perhaps find a feisty intelligent woman of his own.

Meg Chittenden is a professional writer who can take what, in lesser hands, could turn into a trite tale of love and murder and make it into a skilful puzzle with living characters and locations.
