A formally dressed killer disembowels a licensed prostitute one hot summer night in 2059 New York. He leaves a note on expensive notepaper, not available in the United States, for Lt Eve Dallas. He signs it "Jack". Even without the signature, the murder is an obvious copy of one of the Whitechapel murders from the late 19th century.

The only clue Dallas and Peabody have to work on is the notepaper. They trace it to London and eventually find out that four people who have recently purchased this particular unrecycled paper, are currently resident in New York. Eve's suspects are all rather high-profile men, as is to be expected from the quality of the notepaper.

Peabody, studying for the detectives' exam and planning on moving in with her boyfriend, is a bit distracted, but she doesn't want to let Dallas down. Dallas, on the other hand, really wants Peabody to pass, and cuts her more slack than usual.

Then there is a second killing. This time in the style of Albert di Salvo, the Boston Strangler. The murderer has a problem with women. He is enjoying himself, acting the parts he has designed for himself. Roarke and Dallas know his final victim will be Eve herself, the ultimate female authority figure. They have to stop him before he gets to her.

Dallas keeps remembering more of her past. She is beginning to see the value of becoming part of a family. She is even beginning to miss Summerset, but she won't admit that.

JD Robb has been turning out two . . . IN DEATH books a year for several years. This is the 17th. In many ways it is more satisfying than previous books. The characters are as important as the story and we are learning more about the two lead characters, Dallas and Roarke, with each book. It would be best to read the first few books in the series before trying this one, but once you try one, you'll be hooked. The first is NAKED IN DEATH.
