Phil Oxnard, a 68-year-old retired from two previous careers, has embarked on a new one. He is training to be a private investigator. His son, Rob, and daughter-in-law, Sally, have inherited her father's ski resort, Pole Pine Lodge, in the High Sierras. They have a buyer, Bob Drell, for the resort. They ask Phil to determine before they complete the deal whether Drell and his fellow investors are credible.

Phil and his wife, Paula, are to spend two weeks as guests at the Lodge in order to check this out anonymously. Phil doesn't realize that his apprenticeship in the private investigation field is going to be put to the test. He volunteers to search for a young man who had disappeared several months ago while staying at the Lodge. Then one of the watercolors at the art exhibit is vandalized. A woman is found brutally beaten, leaving her in a coma.

Phil is caught up in these incidents and in the course of his investigations believes there is a connection there. He is confronted with the lodge manager who is too smooth-talking; a group of drunken deer hunters; a ultra feminist lodge employee; a vegetarian activist; a dubious realtor and a dangerous-looking biker.

This is a tale of a geriatric amateur sleuth with touches of humor and wit. The mixture of unusual characters make for interesting reading. The action moves at a steady pace with a few complications. This is a quick read with little violence or mayhem.
