DI Charlie Priest is handling the petty crime in Heckley with the help of his team of wisecracking detectives but his private life is another matter. There's someone stealing underwear off clothes lines; slightly more serious are the cases of food tampering at a local chain of supermarkets; and most serious of all is the Ebola scare at the local hospital. There's also a local dogfighting ring that causes needless suffering and death to harmless animals just to titillate the jaded appetites of a few punters.

Charlie is taking a practical geology class with Rosie Barraclough. He thinks there may be a spark between them, but when she finds out he is a policeman, she turns cold. He finds out that her father was hanged for murder and a TV show wants to prove that he had been framed.

Returning to Heckley and Charlie Priest is like coming home to an especially warm welcome. Charlie has time for his painting (he's an art school graduate), for going on long walks on the Yorkshire fells, and going out for a drink with his mates. But he is also a good policeman, and Pawson writes one of the best police procedural series going, proving that a crime novel does not have to be littered with bloody bodies.

Ever since I read the first in the series, THE PICASSO SCAM, I have been attracted to Charlie Priest. But watch out for the one-liners. You may start to giggle in public if you are reading one of Pawson's books during your commute. This is the ninth in the series. Most of the books are out of print. It is well worth searching for them on the secondary market, but don't wait to find number one. Start reading now.
