John DeCure is a smooth and easy writer. BLUEBIRD RISING, his second novel, reads very smooth and easy. The author is a prosecuting attorney with the California State Attorney General's office. This experience is perfect for the legal story he is telling in BLUEBIRD RISING, and he tells the story well.

J. Shepard has his plate full. Aside from working as a prosecuting attorney with the California State Bar Association, he is also engaged to a woman with a mentally handicapped son. Recently she and her son have moved in with J. Adjusting should be simple, but nothing is ever simple. Not to mention J. has taken on a special assignment to help attorneys who have strayed from the moral ethics of the profession to get back on track. Thinking he is doing the right thing, J. handpicks to help Dale Bleeker, a man who solely inspired J. to enter the field of law.

Bleeker has come close to hitting rock bottom. He desperately needs J.'s help to get him out from under. Bleeker, however, is so far under that being sent to jail is a serious looming threat. J. gets in over his head as he tries to make everything right in the world. If it weren't for finding moments to surf the oceans waves, J. might have lost his mind long ago. Diligently working to fix everything may not be enough. J. needs to pull out all the stops or risk drowning in Bleeker's wake?

I need to remind myself that this is smooth and easy read and not a rip-roaring legal thriller. When I can do that, I can sit back and enjoy the environment DeCure has created. The story is well told, thought provoking and smart. I will now need to get my hands on his first novel, REEF DANCE.
