Elvis Cole's girlfriend, Lucy, is out of town on business and Elvis is looking after her ten-year-old when the boy suddenly goes missing. A neighborhood search fails to turn up any sign of the child, Elvis finds Ben's video game abandoned on the hillside below his home and it becomes clear that the boy has been abducted.

Lucy receives a telephone call from an unidentified man who blames Elvis for horrible atrocities which he allegedly committed during his tour of duty in Vietnam and declaring Ben's kidnapping an act of revenge. Since Cole never committed the crimes he's accused of, he can't make sense of either the kidnapping or the message. Then Lucy's ex-husband, Richard, rolls into town in a limo accompanied by his own private security team and things turn really ugly.

Luckily the detective investigating the case quickly recognizes that Elvis is an effective investigator with more insight into the case than she has, and she allows him to take the lead in the effort to recover the boy.

This book is a thrill-a-minute ride you won't want to miss. Crais effortlessly combines the pacing and suspense of his standalones with his familiar series characters to create one kick-ass mystery. Cole's detective work rings true and his fearless search for the boy he loves will leave you gasping. In Ben, Crais has given us one of the most memorable child heroes in detective fiction.
