It's the Fourth of July in Warner Pier, Michigan. A fight develops between Joe Woodyard and Hershel Perkins. Joe is the boyfriend of the main character, Lee McKinney. Their relationship has progressed very slowly due to past baggage both of them possess. The argument between the two men is whether an abandoned drive-in restaurant was deliberately torn down. Everyone in the vicinity is aware of the squabble and this is a perfect set-up when a murder occurs later.

Lee and her aunt Nettie operate a delicious-sounding chocolate shop. If you love to read in detail about many different types of this wonderful food, hang on! As we all know, chocolate should be in one of the main food groups and you will see it displayed here in many forms.

When Hershel is missing, Joe's life becomes disrupted. Many scary things begin to happen and Lee's detective instincts kick into gear to help bring this mystery to a solution.

A fun fast-reading cozy gives us the feeling of this small town. On page 141, the author proclaims, "one sign that a town is really small is that everybody is related to everybody else in some way."

Smell and taste the chocolate! Included are several bits of chocolate trivia. My favorite was when Spanish princess Anne of Austria was married to France's Louis XIII, part of her dowry was chocolate.

The first two books in this series are THE CHOCOLATE CAT CAPER and THE CHOCOLATE BEAR BURGLARY.
