Did Roark the boxer really kill Supreme Court Justice Merton? Dog trainer and former police detective Jack Field doesn't think so. He enlists the aid of his significant other, ME Dr. Jamie Cutter, to prove the dog didn't do it.

Along the way, there are encounters with drug dealers (who turn out to be some of the GOOD guys in this book!), assorted police personnel (not all of whom are on the side of truth, justice, and the American way), and lots of dogs. There are visits to Vietnam, dinners at some nice restaurants, and lots of dogs. Jack takes his dog training seriously. Although I am much more familiar with the "alpha dog" theories, a lot of what Kelley passes along in this book makes sense, and I plan on passing the book along to a friend with a new puppy, just for some of the training tips mentioned in passing.

The plot is convoluted, with lots of bad guys to go around. The writing was good enough to be the first book to pull me out of a post-surgical reading slump - high praise, at this stage of the game. I enjoyed the by-play between Jack and Jamie; it seemed real enough for two mature adults in an evolving relationship.

All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a decent mystery, anyone who likes "dog" mysteries, and anyone who has read book one in the series, A NOSE FOR MURDER. Enjoy! I did.
