Jack has received word that his father was in a serious accident and is currently in a coma. Jack's brother is too busy with his own affairs to go to Florida and requests that he goes instead. With his sister's death less than a year ago, Jack feels that someone might be targeting his family and agrees to go. Once he arrives, Jack quickly realizes that things are not what they seem. There is something strange about the hit and run accident that caused Tom's coma and something sinister with the number of deaths at Gateways, the assisted living community at which Tom resides. In addition, Anya Mundy, Tom's neighbor, is a woman with special knowledge and a dog. She is somehow protecting Tom and will protect Jack as well. To add to the list of strange characters is Semelee, a white-haired witch and the Clan, a group of mutated people living in the Everglades. Jack must find the person responsible for Tom's accident and once again fight the cosmic battle between good and evil.

GATEWAYS is a strange book. There are unusual slow spots where necessary background is provided then there are a few action-packed moments. At times the dialogue borders on the mundane and unrealistic and at others it is almost sparkling. It almost seems as though two very distinctive personalities are attempting to write the same book. This effort is amusing and does not seriously detract from the story; however, it is still noticeable.

In this book, Jack must continue to confront the fact that the Fates, or whoever, have a role for him in the world. He is the Chosen One or rather he will be the Chosen One if the current one dies. This causes the forces of Evil to attack him and try and eliminate him from the picture. For Jack there is no such thing as a coincidence. Current things happen to him for a purpose and that purpose is to confront the Other and save humanity. This might sound convoluted, but it all boils down to the idea that Jack is the good guy, cosmically, and the Others or the bad guys are attempting to kill him.

GATEWAYS: A REPAIRMAN JACK NOVEL is the seventh book in the Repairman Jack series. F. Paul Wilson is the accomplished author of numerous books.
