Some people work hard being constrained to the past leaving them with a stagnant present. For fifteen years Detective Sergeant Diane Fry has been searching for her older sister taking a toll in her professional life as well as her well being. Her job has become her life leaving her no time to cultivate relationships with friend or loved ones. In this novel, Fry will be confronted with a two-year-old case that will hit close to home, having her reflect on her own personal situation. She is convinced that Emma Renshaw, a young woman missing for two years, is dead, but her parents are convinced that their daughter is just lost looking for her way home, as if nothing had ever happened. Diane cannot help but wonder, is this what would happen should I ever find my sister?

In the fourth book in the series featuring Detective Sergeant Diane Fry and Detective Constable Ben Cooper, the protagonist are looking at a brutal and fatal beating of a young man from Withens. Neil Granger was questioned during the disappearance of Emma Renshaw, however, the police had very little to go on. Now with this new development, the Renshaws are hopeful that their daughter will be returning home soon, as the police probe the ongoing investigation.

Booth has a stronghold in character development and knows how to tell a powerful story. BLIND TO THE BONES is not a quick read, but a long and satisfying one. The crime is plain to see, but not the investigation. There are layers and layers of intrigue as the police realize that the past will play an important role in solving the case. Detective Constable Ben Cooper will be forced to make some hard choices that will jeopardize his integrity towards others. The way he manages to handle the situation makes him as real as any character in a book where you look forward to reaching its resolution. BLIND TO THE BONES is an intelligent mystery novel filled with themes that you can take with you after finishing the book. You cannot go wrong reading a Stephen Booth novel.
