Steve Archer, an eighth grade U S history teacher, is the only member of the jury which is to decide the fate of Elena Thompson, accused of murder who believes in her innocence and is the only member of the jury to vote for acquittal. The jury is unable to reach a verdict and so Elena is set free.

Steve begins to have doubts about his decision, and when he receives a note from Elena, thanking him for that decision, he decides to go to Cold Harbor to meet her and try to bolster his feelings that she was framed. In Cold Harbor he meets with hostility and a feeling that the residents of the town are convinced of Elena's guilt.

When there is another murder with all the circumstances pointing to Elena, Steve undertakes to prove her innocence. The resultant events prove dangerous to Steve, and e has difficulties supporting his beliefs.

This is a compelling story of one man's struggle against prejudice and injustice to bring forth the truth of his convictions. Steve's search for the truth against great odds is a tribute to the steadfastness of a man's beliefs. The background of the town of Cold Harbor is realistically portrayed with its inhabitants' characters fully developed. The reader is able to relate to them. This is a well written fast read.
