When one is looking for a book to read, one is looking for an escape from reality. A cozy little mystery based in reality with interesting places or locales and characters that will grab readers from the very beginning. It is unfortunate the Robin Hathaway’s novel THE DOCTOR DINES IN PRAGUE fails to accomplish this leaving readers disillusioned and resigned in the search for a great amateur sleuth.

Dr. Andrew Fenimore has traveled from Philadelphia to Prague in order to find his cousin who he has not heard from in several weeks. When the doctor arrives at the home of his cousin he sees that they have been kidnapped and that he is way over his head. He will have to wait three days before he can start looking for his relatives and get some help. That’s right. THREE WHOLE DAYS.

The book suffers from lots of scenes of incredulity where traveling from Philadelphia to Prague is as easy as taking the New Jersey PATH train to get to New York. The story’s main villain has a ridiculous scheme to overthrow the government inspired by the rich history of Prague as well as its culture. For a main character, which happens to be a cardiologist, he commits a lot of stupid mistakes during his trip that it is hard to take seriously.

If you are looking to practice your rusty Czech language skills, this is a good book to read. As a mystery novel, it fails miserably with its weak plot structuring, sloppy editing, and poor planning. There is more that can be said, but why bother. There are better books out there.
