Vampires and werewolves do exist and can mix in modern society with little effort. Lawson is a Fixer. Fixers exist within the Vampire community in order to help keep the Balance. Fixers kill other vampires who step outside the boundaries set up by the Council. Lawson has no qualms about his job because it is for the best of the community as a whole. In THE DESTRUCTOR he will find himself hunting a killer he let escape before.

Shiva is a half-breed. She is half vampire and half werewolf. This gives her the power of both, as well as the ability to morph into any shape or person she desires. She is also an accomplished assassin and has targeted the head of the vampire council, Belarus, as her next victim. On her tail is Jarvis; a Fixer Lawson is familiar with. Lawson calls upon his old friends Arthur and Wirek in addition to his new control Niles to help save the world. From the beginning Lawson has his doubts about the situation but hides them from his partners. Lawson must figure out the truth behind the conspiracy in order to save Belarus and save the world from destruction.

As always Merz tells an engaging story. Like most fantasy writers, and other writers for that matter, he focuses on the concept of good vs. evil. Admittedly vampires tend to be considered evil in many books; however, within THE DESTRUCTOR they too have people who are evil and those who are not. Like others, Merz also finds himself concerned with some object that can provide power that will destroy the world when used for evil. In many ways this is the ultimate good vs. evil battle – can the good guys stop the bad guys from destroying the world. Although the idea might seem trite, Merz makes the idea seem fresh and captivating.

Merz’s characters are fleshed out and interesting. Since the book focuses on Lawson he is obviously the most developed. Lawson is a flawed character, but is aware of every single one of his flaws. He is short tempered and is essentially a loner in terms of his work. He killed his previous control and has had problems filling this position. Yet, at times Lawson does not question the situation or people around him enough. Although not willing to take things at face value, he does not always question things until it is already too late.

THE DESTRUCTOR is Jon F. Merz’s third book in the series.
