Mick Sever is a prominent music critic with published books about the topic. He has had some experience with Robert Shapply and his son Nick; hence, he is asked to write a story about them. Although the Shapply family used to make their money signing musicians and their work, Robert has found religion and renounced all of the pagan ways of the rock world. In addition, Robert has made it part of his agenda to denounce gansta rap and fight for stricter parental control labels. Sever turns down the offer to write an article until he hears that Robert was murdered. Then the police announce the capture of Nick, who is their most likely suspect. Although Sever hates both Robert and Nick, he feels that he must find the murderer and protect the family name.

In his search for Robert's murderer, he turns to old friends for help. His ex-wife, Ginny, is an editor and agrees to help Sever with his research. He also turns to T-Beau, a former musician who now finds new talent. His latest talent is also involved in this murder; hence, he plans to help clear his client. Sever must dig into Robert's life and the mysterious events from 20 years before in order to solve a present day murder.

Bruns does a phenomenal job of explaining the music industry and its controversial nature. Politicians have been concerned with freedom of expression and hate music for quite some time. The theory being that gansta rap and other explicit lyrics are what causes the violence that happens on the street. That musicians have the moral obligation to present clean songs to prevent people from acting out their fantasy or delusions. Those advocating freedom of speech state that these artists are merely expressing their lives and have ever right to. This is a huge controversy that has been around for years. This book merely takes their concerns to the next level. In addition, BARBADOS HEAT presents the idea that those with the biggest concerns with freedom of speech and parental warning labels also have the most to fear from their own past.

BARBADOS HEAT is the second book by Don Bruns.
