In this, the seventh in the series, Lieutenant Bak is ordered by his commander, Thuty, to help find a missing explorer, Minnakht. Minnakht was last seen going into the desert as he had done on many occasions to explore and search for precious minerals. When in company he told fascinating stories of his travels. Bak considers it possible that one of his listeners believed he had found gold and tried to force him to reveal where. Bak, the guide Senna who had worked with Minnakht, and four of Bak's policemen go into the desert. They join a caravan. Several men of the caravan knew Minnakht. The first morning they find a slain young man who had joined the caravan for a night and whom no one knew. More seriously, a few nights later the caravan's guide, Dedu, is murdered.

Bak attempts to solve all these mysteries. By the time he does solve the puzzles he has visited a turquoise mine and the Eastern Sea.

I have enjoyed all the books in this series, and A Path of Shadows is no exception. Haney has an excellent sense of time, place, and setting. The desert is so well drawn in this book it serves almost as a character. The details of ordinary life in the time of the Pharoah Hatchepsut are integrated into the story. The characterization is not the best part of the book, but is adequate. Overall a recommended book in an excellent series.
