Jaine Austen ( her mother was an Anglophile who couldn't spell) makes her living writing love letters, personal ads, and industrial brochures. She is THIS PEN FOR HIRE. She lives in Los Angeles with her cat, Prozac.

Howard Murdoch hires her to write a letter to gorgeous fitness instructor, Stacy Lawrence, proclaiming his everlasting love. Jaine doesn't expect any results from the letter, so is surprised when Stacy agrees to go out with Howard on Valentine's Day. When Howard arrives at Stacy's apartment he finds Stacy bludgeoned to death with a Thighmaster. Howard is the police's only suspect.

Jaine feels guilty because her letter led to the meeting, and determines to exonerate Howard. In investigating Stacy's background she finds that there are many who have reason to dislike Stacy :Elaine Zimmer who had been cheated out of moving into Stacy's choice corner apartment; the building superintendent who is besotted with her; a married producer and his girl friend. Jaine's neighbor, Cameron Bannick, an antique dealer, arouses Jaine's interest and works together with her to try to find the murderer.

Jaine is a delightful young woman with a sense of humor which she never loses even in the most trying situations. The action is fast. The writing style is brisk and witty. The descriptions of Los Angeles are excellent, giving the reader the sense of being there.

This is an enjoyable read with hopefully more to come since Jaine has posted an ad: "Discreet Inquiries..Work Done With Pride Not Prejudice". What more can we ask?
