The Scoundrel could just as easily have been titled sometihing like The Thief of Hearts or Ravensmuir Rascal - Gawain Lammergeier is all of the above. Lady Evangeline of Inverfyre would probably opt for any of the above, since Gawain was all of them to her.

Lady Evangeline is the last of the line of Magnus Armstrong, charged with regaining the Titulus Croce, a religious relic thought to carry with it the success of the falconing Inverfyre fortunes. It was stolen fifteen years ago by Gawain Lammergeier, and the falcons have since been sterile.

In a scene that defies belief, Evangeline does steal back the Titulus Croce, which Gawain has stolen (again) from his brother Merlyn (is it a rule that romances from this time period must have a character named "Merlyn"?). In the process, she challenges Gawain to find her again.

Of course, he does, and steals (again) the Titulus. And so it goes, back and forth, for the rest of the book. There are lots of other plot twists and turns; this book does not lack for suspense or surprises. As onemight surmise, Gawain also steals Evangeline's heart, although he is pretty up-front with her about his personal character, mores, and the like. She certainly can't say she wasn't warned, or that he led her astray.

I put this book down a lot, and picked it back up. I had hoped to learn a lot more about falconry and peregrines; I did learn a few things I didn't know but not as much as I would have liked. The opportunities were there but Delacroix didn't always leap on them.

There is another book in the series, before this one, titled The Rogue and one forthcoming titled The Warrior. I'll keep an eye out for both of them at the library, but I won't buy either one. Entertaining, a good read for a rainy afternoon, even though we all know the ending will be contrary to what Gawain has proclaimed throughout the entire book. I give this book a nice, solid B grade.
