Dennis Lehane's book, "A Drink Before the War" was awarded the Shamus award for best first novel. At the early age of twenty five Dennis Lehane sat down and wrote his first novel. The result, "A Drink Before the War" opens a gritty series featuring Patrick Kenzie, son of a Boston fireman and Angie Gennaro, one of his closest friends since grade school.

At the opening of the book Patrick has been hired by some of his late fathers political associates. A cleaning woman has been accused of taking some important papers from one of the politicians desk. These men want Angie and Patrick to find her and recover the documents

Upon finding the woman they soon discover that all is not as simple as it seems. It is not just documents the lady has and she is gunned down before they can recover the stolen items.

What follows is a tale of gang wars, politicians, morality and Patrick's struggle with his father's past and Angie's struggle with her present to an abusive man,

I have read and enjoyed some of Dennis Lehane's earlier books but reading this, his first book has given me a better understanding of where he is coming from. Now I must find and read this series in order.
