Neither novelizations of movies nor book spin-offs of television series interest me in the least, even if I loved the film or the series. The start of a "Diagnosis Murder" series featuring Mark Sloan and others at Community General Hospital called to me because it was written by Lee Goldberg who was a writer on "Diagnosis Murder" as well as other television shows. That wouldn't have been enough, however. I am a big fan of his two mystery novels MY GUN HAS BULLETS and BEYOND THE BEYOND. I knew, of course, that the Mark Sloan novel wouldn't be as quirky and full of dark humor has his two novels, but I also felt certain that the book would be entertaining. I was not wrong.

Dr. Mark Sloan has long been an amateur sleuth, helped by the fact that his son, Steve, is an LAPD professional detective. The Chief of Police is not, however, one of Sloan's biggest fans. He invites him to serve on a special task force of cold cases, murders of the past that have not been solved.

On the task force are Mark, Lt. Tanis Archer from the LAPD, a former FBI profiler and a best selling author of true crime books on serial killers. Mark is certain, from a case that was put by accident in the cold cases that someone might be imitating the methods of various serial killers. This is a popular theory with the chief, but Mark soldiers on, as usual even getting Steven involved which could be the detriment of his career.

Meanwhile, back at the hospital, an entrepreneur, operated on by Mark's former protégé, Jack. Is it medical malpractice or murder with a number of suspects, including Mark's present protégé, Jesse?

Fast paced and entertaining, DIAGNOSIS MURDER: THE SILENT PARTNER makes me happy that there is another in the works. If you were a fan of the long running Dick Van Dyke series, or even if you never watched it, this paperback original is well worth the price.
