The third book in this series finds Lawson, the Fixer, trying to find Shiva, a rogue vampire in Hawaii. All he has to go on is an indistinct photo, so when a beautiful woman sits on the bench next to him, he starts a normal conversation. It isn't until later that he realizes she is Shiva, and she is at least part lycanthrope. She changes shape and disappears before his eyes.

He returns to Boston to report to Niles, his new control. The Council is not pleased with Lawson. He is, after all, supposed to maintain the balance between the human and vampire worlds, but Lawson, as usual, really doesn't care what the Council thinks. He's a bit annoyed that no one had told him Shiva was a shapeshifter.

Things start getting more complicated when Jarvis, a Fixer with whom Lawson had worked before, one he does not trust, is sent to Boston to work with Lawson on finding Shiva, who, Jarvis claims, is out to kill Belarus, the head of the Council. Shiva, who has killed several Fixers, shows up in Jamaica Plain, at Lawson's house, and tries to convince him that Jarvis is the dangerous one...the one who is attempting to kill Belarus.

With help from Arthur, the retired Fixer, now chief factotum at the Beacon Hill mansion that is headquarters to the Council, and Wirek, the ex-elder, who has cleaned up his act since the last book, Lawson finally gets to the bottom of the who is doing what to whom.

This book is just as powerful as THE FIXER, and THE INVOKER. The tossing aside of the literary conventions about Vampires gives Merz more scope to create a parallel world within our own. I await the 4th, and hopefully, not the last, in the series, due out shortly.
