Jonas Lamb has scarcely ever seen his only child, son of wife number two of approximately six, but now this grown-up genetic engineer has need of his father's charm and connections. Son Patrick has come across genetically modified corn that seems to be able extend gasoline tenfold, and he needs money to continue his studies of what happens in future corn generations.

Jonas has made money and always lost it. Edging out of middle age, he's broke and married to a superwealthy dying woman whose children are set on denying him the modest fortune he's been promised. So although Jonas lives very well indeed, he doesn't have any actual money to fund Patrick's dreams. For the chance of becoming a contender for richest man in the world, however, he does have a rich boy network he can tap into that will be receptive to the opportunity to control the finances.

So this caper takes him to see, confidentially, a billionaire chum in China, but a secret worth knowing doesn't long remain a secret. Soon the Texas good ole boys know, and the White House, OPEC, the CIA, and some would-be radical environmentalists are involved. Everybody's hired an assassin or guards to protect the principals from assassins, each more bizarre than the last. And then there are Jonas's stepchildren, more implacable enemies than the conventional monsters.

The cinematic plot has lots of explosions, complex and eventually foiled nefarious plans, scary moments, and funny complications, and it all turns out in the end the way you might expect. But along the way, Jonas figures out what's important in life.
