In Alafair Burke’s entertaining debut novel, the author creates an element of fun telling a novel drawn from her diverse experiences inside the Portland District Attorney’s office. The main character rings true to life as she tells her story in her own words. She is trying to bring justice to a thirteen-year-old rape victim and she will do everything under her power to get it. It will not be as easy as she thought.

Samantha Kincaid is an overconfident deputy district attorney who is convinced that she has what it takes to convict Frank Derringer for the brutal assault on Kendra Martin. When the public defender brings new evidence bringing doubt on her client’s culpability, the prosecution is racing against the time. They are convinced they have the right individual, but they need a smoking gun. Samantha with the assistance of several detectives in the Portland police department will hunt for the truth. They will uncover something even worse than a teen rape and a conspiracy. If they are not careful, more people will be hurt.

Most first-person narrated courtroom novels are seen through the point-of-view of the defense attorney, but JUDGMENT CALLS goes the other way. Readers get to see what it takes to present a case and all the hard work it entails. The prosecutors are not only interested in winning their cases, but making sure that the guilty are always punished by the fullest extent of the law.

Samantha Kincaid is a bit verbose when describing the legal proceedings inside the novel, but that is what makes the debut more appealing. The deputy district attorney is introducing herself to the readers explaining who she is and what she does by giving a glimpse into her personal and private life. As time moves on, the character will be a bit more confident and more at ease with herself. It will be interesting to see how things progress in the future with her next adventure. Alafair Burke is off to a great start. Get in on the ground floor and watch her climb in popularity. You heard it here.
