Twelve year old master criminal Artemis Fowl is out to get fairy gold. First he and his bodyguard Butler must find one of the little people, an alcoholic living in Viet Nam who sustains life by telling fortunes , and get her secret book in which all fairy lore in stored. With that done, Artemis and Butler return to the family castle in Ireland.

Capt. Holly Short a member of the LEPrecon unit (Lower Element Police Reconnaissance) has been sent to the land of the mud people to recapture a troll who has gone on a rampage. Holly has not renewed her energy in far too long, so she is easily captured. She must find a way to escape before the rest of the fairy folk destroy all life in the castle.

This will be a battle to the finish. Artemis Fowl senior had come a cropper when trying to defy the Russian Mafia and the family fortunes are low. Artemis Fowl Jr. and Butler, the family retainer, are the only ones who can restore the Fowls to their superior position in the world of crime. Mrs. Fowl is no help. She's become an invalid, so it is Artemis and Butler who must do the heavy lifting.

With a combination of cunning and technology, we know that the fairies (including satyrs, trolls, dwarfs etc.) will win. But not before a giant battle. And do we really want Artemis to lose all?

I liked this one better than Lemony Snicket, but I am not 11 years old. My grandson hasn't tried it yet, but I would recommend this to any middle school child who enjoys a bit of naughtiness.
