One requisite to be a good writer is to be an avid reader. Early in his career, Stephen Kind envisioned writing a saga inspired by westerns and stories of errant knights who give everything up in their lives to go on a quixotic quest. Stephen King envisioned a world where the fabric of reality is slowly deteriorating until there is nothing else. On 1982, he published the first book of The Dark Tower series and the popularity fell beyond his wildest expectations. He has teased readers with elements or snippets of The Dark Tower in some of his later novels such as INSOMNIA, HEARTS IN ATLANTIS and most notably THE STAND.

Now, Mr. King is nearing his retirement’ and before he bids adieu he will conclude the series in the next few years. It all began with THE GUNSLINGER and it is being reissued once again. Read the beginning of what might be the end.

In Recorded Books unabridged audio version of this book, award-winning narrator George Guidall introduces us to Roland of Gilead, the last gunslinger of a world similar to Earth, but not quite. He is somewhat like the last Jedi in his world. Something happened a long time ago and the world is constantly changing towards extinction. He is searching for a man who can provide answers, the infamous Man in Black. He is the embodiment of evil and he has the answers regarding the Tower Roland is seeking. The book provides little answers as it serves to introduce the character and what he goes through in his quest. He will meet obstacles along the way and meet a boy from a place called Earth, who will serve as his Sancho Panza to his Don Quixote. It is the start of something special and no one knows how it will end.

Guidall gives a clear atmospheric story similar to the kind you would hear on a campfire or a troubadour. He details the hero's exploits and defeats including a major act of betrayal towards one of the characters. There are clues sprinkled in the novel as to what comes next in THE DRAWING OF THE THREE that will help the gunslinger find the answers he is looking for and stop a great evil from coming into completion. There will be major revelations and a glimpse of things to come. Do not let this moment pass you by.
