In Peter Spiegelman's debut novel, the author introduces John March, a former small town police officer from upstate New York, and working as a private investigator in New York after a devastating loss. He moved to the city and set up a P.I. practice.

He is working for Michael Metz, a childhood friend and lawyer, trying to help one of his clients. Rick Pierro is a self-made man worth millions. For the last several weeks, he has been receiving faxes from an unknown individual, threatening to expose him about some questionable dealings with Gerard Nassouli, a former executive of a bank involved in money laundering, fifteen years ago. Pierro declares the deals he worked were on the up and up and wants to learn the identity of the blackmailer.

During the course of the investigation, March learns that Pierro is not the only person being extorted and that there is more to meet the eye. The author creates a good atmosphere and a suspenseful thriller. It is unfortunate that the same cannot be said for the abridged CD version of the novel.

David Aaron Baker might be a good reader, but as an audio performer there is much to be desired. He is himself when he plays the private investigator, but the other characters suffer. When he performs as Pierro you need to crank the volume up just to be able to understand what he is saying. He does not speak softer when doing female characters, but when it comes to thugs he has them licked. My suggestion is to read the book, forget the audio.
