After reading Alice Sebold's first novel, "The Lovely Bones" this reader was impressed. This was such an amazing first novel. The book quickly made its way to the top of my 5 most favorite books of the year list,

Much more amazing was my reaction to Ms. Sebold's next book her memoir, "Lucky". This book read like a mystery or perhaps a police procedural. A young girl goes off to college. She is away from home and the protection of her parents for the first time. She is raped and brutalized on campus, just minutes from her room.

The horror of what is done to this young girl is unbelievable. The strength and courage she shows is amazing. However when this reader stopped and realized that this is a true story it made it all the more terrible. This was a true act of terror that happened to a now well-known author, Ms. Alice Sebold.

I started this book in early afternoon. After the first ten pages the world around me ceased to exist. My poor husband received only nods and irritated grunts at his attempt at conversation. After turning the last page I simply shut the book and went into a deep study.

Such courage and determination in such horrifying circumstances was unreal. Of course Ms. Sebold hit some bumps in her life after this experience. Who could not be deeply affected by such a vile act? But she cane out on top, victorious and an inspiration for all women.
