China Rivers' ne'er do well brother, Cherokee, appears on her doorstep one evening, with a proposition. They are to act as couriers to deliver a set of architectural drawings for a WW II museum to be erected on the Island of Guernsey. For this, the will get round trip plane tickets from California to England and $5000. Against her better judgment, China agrees. One morning, Guy Brouard, the man who will be funding the museum, goes for his normal early morning swim, watched from her bedroom window by his 66 year old sister, who is suffering from terminal cancer. He doesn't return, but is found dead, choked by a strange stone forced down his throat. China is jailed and Cherokee seeks out Deborah St. James, who was befriended by China when Deborah attended university in the US. Deborah and her husband Simon go to Guernsey, to try and find the truth. George introduces several secondary characters, all of whom are well developed, as well as some fascinating detail of Guernsey during WW II. However, despite the horrid miscasting of Barbara Havers in the television series based on the George novels, she remains my favorite character in the series and she does not appear at all in this book. I'll listen to anything Simon Jones records. He reads well, and, if his American accent is not always perfect, that's a minor quibble. From his many years in the US, his British accent has moderated somewhat, so that he is very easy to understand. I do recommend this abridged version of A PLACE OF HIDING if you are a mild fan of the series, just to keep au courant of what is happening to the characters.
