Flagan and Galloway Sackett, heading West to seek their fortune, encounter Black Fletcher. After this encounter with him from which they escape with their lives, they meet with an Irish homesteader who offers them horses if they will escort his granddaughter, Judith, to her father in Colorado. Since they need the horses they agree, not foreseeing the trouble in the future.

They do not realize that Black Fletcher has his eye on the girl, and wants to marry her. Judith is enamoured with Fletcher and wants to marry him. Fletcher with his expensive hired guns pursues the Sackett brothers and Judith across the country to Judith's father's ranch in Colorado. The trip involves gunfighting and robberies with an unexpected finale awaiting them in Colorado. To complicate matters Flagan falls in love with Judith, but is in doubt about her.

This is another of the tales of the Sacketts, written by the prolific Louis L'Amour, perhaps the greatest Western writer of all times. He has captured the West to perfection. His characters are well drawn with the characteristics of bravery, loyalty, strength and high morals. The story is full of humorous incidents, but is in turns serious and grim. There is plenty of action with gun fights, chases and robberies. A truly entertaining trip across the Western frontier.
