Ethan Decker, a specialized Hunter for a secretive US government agency is forced to leave his wife, Sydney, when a mission turned deadly. In retribution Ramirez, an assassin, kills Ethan's son. To prevent Ramirez from killing Sydney, Ethan hides himself in the desert in New Mexico. Anna Kelsey, former member of Decker's team and its only other survivor, brings two children to Decker's secret hiding place. Before she can explain, she is killed. Ramirez signature is left on her body.

Desperate to protect his wife who seems to be the assassin's next target, Dexter leaves the desert with the two siblings, Dannie and Callie. He also must learn why Anna had given her life to protect the two children. He discovers that they are fleeing from the Keeper, who runs a secret scientific institution which specializes in genetic experimentation.

When Decker rescues Sydney the four embark on a cross country chase from Illinois to Washington state and the island where the laboratory and its 25 children are located. They are pursed not only by Ramirez but also by men from Decker's former agency who will stop at nothing to prevent the revealation of the island.

This is a taut fast paced thriller. The characters are well defined with the personalities of the two children absorbing. The cross country chase with its non-stop action is breathtaking. The plot is well constructed with suspense, betrayal and doublecrosses. The premise behind the experiments on the Island is chilling and hopefully implausible.
