Hannah Doyle works in Emerald City Video, one of the most eclectic video rental stores in Seattle. She has a troubled past and abusive husband, which she is hoping to escape. Although her job will not allow her to save a lot of money for the future, it does keep her happy. Unfortunately, she finds herself the target of a stalker. At first, she just feels as though she is being followed but soon the terror escalates. People who have been rude to her are suddenly dying violent deaths. In addition, someone is breaking into her apartment and leaving videotapes cued to murder scenes. The murder method shown will be the method next used by the stalker. These events obviously make her doubt the legitimacy of everyone around her. Hannah does not have anywhere to turn because she cannot afford the publicity that contacting the police would create. Hannah must determine who she can trust before she is the next star in a death scene.

WATCH THEM DIE uses an interesting premise. This serial killer is not the traditional killer; he does not have a preferred method for killing. Instead, his work imitated the movies. This killer wants to direct death scenes rather than allow death to happen naturally. In addition, his victims are not of the same socio-cultural background or the same sex. The only thing they had in common was the fact that they were, in some form, a part of Hannah's life.

WATCH THEM DIE has a great build up and interesting characters. Admittedly, not all of the characters' actions make sense; however, they are appealing. Unfortunately, the ending was disappointing. The ending felt as though O'Brien decided it was time to finish the book so he just stopped developing the plot and wrapped everything up. Having a nice clean ending is always appealing; however, it felt unrealistic and caused this reader to feel cheated.

WATCH THEM DIE is the fifth book by Kevin O'Brien. He is the author of several other thriller type books including NEXT TO DIE and MAKE THEM CRY.
