Maggie O'Dell is ready to enjoy her vacation. Her divorce is finally final and she is ready to move on with her life. The day before her vacation begins, she gets a call from Dr. Gwen Patterson, one of her closest friends. Gwen's patient, Joan Begley, has not returned from her trip to Connecticut. Joan did call Gwen to tell her about a man she met and her interest in him. Gwen is worried because Joan does not have a good track record with men. Maggie agrees to investigate. She quickly learns about a murdered woman found in the area and rushes off to Connecticut for more information.

Sheriff Henry Watermeier, a former NYPD officer, moved to Connecticut as a transition from the hectic pace of NY to the tranquility of retirement. Finding barrels containing dead bodies was not part of this plan. He obviously has a serial killer on his hands; unfortunately, the victims do not seem to have anything in common. He does turn to Maggie for assistance. Maggie must profile the killer and find Joan before Joan becomes his next victim.

AT THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT is written to the same standards of Kava's previous books. This formula seems to work well for her: Maggie finds a serial killer, Maggie obsesses about her love life, Maggie puts herself into a dangerous situation, and finally Maggie catches the bad guy. It is pretty obvious that this formula is beginning to get stale. Tracking down serial killers is interesting; however, Maggie's obsessions are just getting old. Having a flawed protagonist is interesting; yet, Maggie never has new problems. She continues to obsess over those introduced in the first book of the series. Kava needs to decide how she wants this series to progress and then follow through with her decision. Until this happens her books will simply continue to grow flat and become predictable and unreadable.

AT THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT is the fourth book in the Maggie O'Dell series.
