Being from the south I can understand why Bay Tanner goes to the rescue of Mercer Mary Prescott. Even though they have never met and Mercer is only a half-fifth cousin. Family is everything in the south, even if that family is calling from the local jail where they are being held on vagrancy charges.

Bay's father, retired Judge Tanner calls in a few favors and Bay soon returns with the errant cousin under her wing. Little does the Tanner family know of the trouble this straggly looking young woman will be bring with her.

Mercer had been abandoned by her mother, and raised as a foster child. She is involved in anti-nuclear demonstrations. The police are searching for her, a man who claims to be her husband is looking for her and two young camouflage dressed young girls, with very violent manners are looking for her.

Unfortunately she has slipped away from Bay. Bay, her father and a young man they use as a computer guru have formed a type of investigative service and attempt to track down Mary Mercer before some of her more violent searchers find her.

Kathryn Wall is a wonderful writer who captures the south and most importantly the beauty of the South Carolina perfectly. She creates characters that are real and likable. Characters that a reader grows to care about.
