A woman is missing, last seen four days ago getting into an unmarked police car. Her nearly frantic grandfather calls on an old friend, sophisticated and streetwise Woody Lisle, for help. Woody is something of a legend in Chicago's Cook County. Rumors still circulate in his old neighborhood about things he may or may not have been involved with in the past-- when Woody gets involved on your behalf, you can expect results.

Woody's wife Ivy becomes part of the informal investigation as a matter of course. Their college-age grandniece Cassandra, the narrator of this tale, invites herself to be part of the search as well (she could probably use the distraction in her purportedly lackluster life). Convoluted and sometimes grudgingly given tips lead them to a disturbing connection between a prematurely closed murder case, Lavelle's disappearance, and a civil rights group at Cassandra's college.

Set in the spring of 1968 following the assassination of Martin Luther King, tension and uncertainty are a constant background presence for Cook County residents. This book was absorbing from the very first page -- Cassandra is an engaging narrator, someone you can trust and respect. Jackson Park is the first of a new series of Cook County mysteries, and subsequent books promise to be interesting and well-written, at least, even if not life-changing. I look forward to reading more of the series.
